Keen on incorporating the principles of game-based learning in your instructional pedagogy? Bloxels is one of those platforms you may want to try out with your students. Bloxels enables students to engage in meaningful hands-on learning activities using video games they themselves create. Students will get to design characters, art, stories, animations, backgrounds, games, and many more. Whether they want to tell a story, explain a complex process, explore a historical location, or simply create something fun and educational, Bloxels offers the tools and know-how necessary to unleash students creative thinking.
Bloxels has a special service called Bloxels Edu devoted to the education community. There you will have access to a wide variety of resources designed specifically for educators including instructional video tutorials, lesson plans, EDU Hub, and many more. Students can start creating their games using 8 simple blocks: terrain, liquid, collectible, hazard, action, power-up, enemy, and story. Each of these blocks has 'a specific gameplay trait and some can be configured'. Using Bloxels Character Builder students get to 'draw and animate pixel characters and give them special powers like speed, flight, fire, magic and more in the Character Lab'.
Also, Bloxels offers "themed asset packs stuffed full of ready-made art, characters and backgrounds for you to use in your games. Mix and match, use as-is or edit them to your liking! New assets are added to the app regularly". Once the game is ready, students can share it with others.
