Google announced today an interesting new feature to Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides allowing users to view embedded Office files in their documents and/or download or copy them directly to Drive. The purpose behind this new update, as Google stated, is to create a 'seamless work experience'.

With this new update, you can access embedded Office files within your existing Office files right from Docs, Slides, and Sheets. When you hover your mouse over the embedded file you have the option to view it in preview mode or to add it to your Drive. This feature is available to Google Workspace users as well as those with personal Google accounts.
Since Google added built-in support for Microsoft productivity tools, it becomes easier for Drive users to access, edit, comment, and collaborate on Office files right within Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets. The supported Office files are: Word files (.doc, .docx, .dot), Excel files (xls, .xlsx, .xlsm, (macro enabled Excel files), .xlt), and PowerPoint files (.ppt, .pptx, .pps, .pot).
