Back to TED talks but this time with a collection of wonderful talks curated primarily for music teachers and, of course, anyone else interested in music. We started this collection with a talk from by Evelyn Glennie (percussionist and composer) in which she explains the acoustic art of listening and enjoying music. We followed this with a series of talks that are basically musical performances given by some brilliant kids and teenagers. You can also visit TED’s Music section where you can access a wide variety of talks related to music. There is also this playlist called Maestros, if you please…’ featuring 10 talks delivered by some of the most popular maestros in the world. Enjoy
1- How to truly listen by Evelyn Glennie
‘In this soaring demonstration, deaf percussionist Evelyn Glennie illustrates how listening to music involves much more than simply letting sound waves hit your eardrums.’
2- An 11year old’s magical violin by Sirena Huang
‘Violinist Sirena Huang gives a technically brilliant and emotionally nuanced performance. In a charming interlude, the 11-year-old praises the timeless design of her instrument.’
3- The violin, and my dark night of the soul by Ji-Hae Park
‘In her quest to become a world-famous violinist, Ji-Hae Park fell into a severe depression. Only music was able to lift her out again — showing her that her goal needn’t be to play lofty concert halls, but instead to bring the wonder of the instrument to as many people as possible.’
4- An 11 year old’s prodigy performs old-school jazz
‘Raised listening to his dad's old records, Joey Alexander plays a brand of sharp, modern piano jazz that you likely wouldn't expect to hear from a pre-teenager.’
5- A Young Guitarist meets his hero
‘Usman Riaz is a 21-year-old whiz at the percussive guitar, a style he learned to play by watching his heroes on YouTube. The TED Fellow plays onstage at TEDGlobal 2012 — followed by a jawdropping solo from the master of percussive guitar, Preston Reed. And watch these two guitarists take on a very spur-of-the-moment improv.’
6- Bluegrass virtuosity from…New Jersey? by Sleepy Man Banjo Boys
‘All under the age of 16, brothers Jonny, Robbie and Tommy Mizzone are from New Jersey…play three dazzling songs in three different keys, passing the lead back and forth from fiddle to banjo to guitar.’
